Beantown’s Been Increasingly Bound to Chinese Imports

Corp - Ports 877 Mode - Containerized 1465 Mode - Seaborne 1798 U.S. 5314

Container handling through the Port of Boston increased 19% on a year earlier in September, the seventh month of growth this year. Most of the expansion was from empty container handling, though import growth of 10% outstripped a 1% slide in exports. That’s a similar pattern to that seen across the nation. The growth in imports relied on a 10% rise in shipments from China in the third quarter, with the EU dropping 34%. The former may reflect increased shipments via the Panama Canal while the latter may be due to a loss of volumes to the newly enhanced New York facilities.
