Container handling through California’s major ports fell by 5.6% year over year in February. Long Beach did worst with a 9.8% drop in activity, largely as the result of a 21.1% slump in imports from China. The earlier lunar new year compared to a year earlier was a big factor, though when combining January and February together there was still an 18.9% slide. Leading sectors in decline were autos – which fell 36.8% – as well as machinery and furniture.
