Container handling through South Carolina’s ports, led by Charleston, climbed 10% on a year earlier in September. Hurricane interruptions early in the month were shrugged off, while the growth in imports reached 7% and outstripped exports’ 4% increase. Charleston’s import growth was led by shipments from China which jumped 31% to reach a new record of over 25,000 TEUs. Imports from the EU meanwhile climbed 6%, suggesting Charleston won market share from its southern competitor Savannah.
