China Applies New North Korean Sanctions as Imports Boom

The Chinese government has implemented the latest round of UN sanctions against North Korea, cutting China’s exports of oil products and LNG and its imports of apparel. Panjiva data shows apparel accounted for $732 million, or 27% of China’s imports. Buyers of North Korean products in China clearly saw new sanctions coming. China’s imports from North Korea of all products jumped 84% in August vs. July, with the result that China’s total trade with the DPRK hit the highest since November and the second highest since December 2014.
