Ongoing labor unrest at the Port of Gothenburg provides a cautionary tale for port operators as they consider automation strategies. While volumes through the port climbed 3% on a year earlier in the first quarter that covers the effect of strikes at Maersk’s facilities last year. Those resulted in a 12.7% drop in volumes for the full year, and the apparent decision of Grimaldi’s ACL to no longer support Gothenburg-to-U.S. routes. That can be seen in a 90% slump in containerized shipments from the port on all U.S.-bound lanes in March and April vs. a year earlier.
