The Port of Virginia, centered on Norfolk, set a new record for container handling in 2017 with a 7% growth rate to reach 2.84 million TEUs. It ended the year though with a slowing of trade, with a 3% increase in the month of December due to a drop in empty container handling. Import growth of 8% outpaced the 4% expansion in exports, suggesting an increase in the local trade deficit. Its import performance nonetheless beat the national average (of 6%) due to an 8% rise in both Chinese and European inbound traffic.
