HP’s purchase of Samsung Electronics’ printer business comes at a time of market contraction. Panjiva data shows U.S. imports of printing equipment were 18% lower in the 12 months to July 31 than a year earlier. Nearer term, imports in the month of July dropped 17% lower and in August fell 8% compared to July 2015. HP pre-merger imported 38% fewer printers in the three months to August 31 than a year earlier, while Samsung brought in 22.5% less. At least Samsung has been cutting its exposure to Hanjin Shipping.
