The Indian government will increase import tariffs on chickpeas, only introduced in December, to 40% from 30%. That follows a broad set of agriculture tariffs implemented this year, including sugar, designed to protect domestic farmers. The prior tariffs may already have had an impact, with imports in December having fallen by 37% on a year earlier. Peak imports for the year normally come in December and January.
