KORUS Today, Pain Tomorrow as Korean Trade Surplus Remains High Despite Falling

South Korean trade goes from strength-to-strength with exports having increased by 9% on a year earlier in December, making the 14th straight increase. That’s partly been the result of a weaker won, though a 65% surge in semiconductor shipments to China has been the major driver. A 35% drop in automotive exports and a 19% slide in appliances may be the first sign that manufacturers are concerned about the forthcoming trade actions from the Trump administration.
