U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross has called for the revised NAFTA to deal to include a five year “sunset” clause. That would lead to the deal lapsing automatically if not revised. Canada and Mexico are already against the move, which may be nothing more than a negotiating stance linked to President Trump’s repeated “terminate” threat. A lot can change in five years – the deficit with Mexico is just 5% higher than five years earlier, while for Canada it is 40% lower. An automatic cancellation in mid-2018 could easily be to the disadvantage of the U.S.
