National Security Review May Have More Bearing on Imports Than Commerce Case

The U.S. Commerce Department has ruled that South Korean exports of tapered roller bearings were dumped in the U.S. market. The case is notable in being a steel component not included in the section 232 “national security” review of steel but one that may be captured in the section 232 automotive industry review given the parts’ use in steering systems. In any event the current case has been largely unsuccessful with imports from South Korea (which represent just 8% of the total in the past year) having risen by 21% in the three months to April 30.
