A late surge in U.S. imports in 2018 has led to a build-up of congestion at the port of Newark and New York, leading to higher in- and outbound handling fees. The raising of the Bayonne Bridge has allowed larger container vessels to use the port, resulting in a 12.8% growth in imports to the port in 2018 compared to 2017. In the near-term the ports’ volumes will be a function of U.S.-China tariff talks while in the longer term new rail facilities should make the port more efficient.
