Container handling at the Port of Oakland climbed 13% in September, the fastest rate since August 2010 excluding seasonal effects. That’s a turnaround from a 4% decline in August, and partly reflects a surge in handling of empty containers compared to Hanjin Shipping related disruptions a year earlier. It was also the result of import growth of 13% beating a 3% slide in exports, as seen across the U.S. in August. The import expansion was led by a 14% increase in shipments from China, while shipments from Taiwan and South Korea continued to slide.
