Railways run hotter as multimodal expansion accelerates in November

Freight handling on U.S. Class 1 railroads continued to accelerate in November with total handling by the big seven firms rising by 1.4% year over year in the four weeks to Nov. 25. That’s been driven by increased shipments of multimodal freight including a 10.3% increase in shipments of containers, likely due to the continued expansion of imports into U.S. sea ports. The container growth included a 21.4% rise in shipments handled by Canadian National and an 11.3% improvement in handling by Berkshire Hathaway’s BNSF.
