Port Houston’s container handling expanded by 6% in July, the 13th month of growth in the past 14. Imports led the way with a 13%, outstripping the 2% expansion in exports – a pattern seen around the country. Shipments from China were responsible for the import growth, rising 35% on a year earlier – likely reflecting traffic diversions from the Panama Canal widening a year ago. Traffic from Europe also expanded, by 22%, suggesting Houston has taken share from northeast ports. One challenge for August and September will be the impact of Hurricane Harvey.
