Retailers of kids’ clothes may be having tough times. Imports of kids’ apparel dropped 12% on a year earlier in the third quarter, having fallen 13% in September alone. Imports of t-shirts were 26% lower. More seasonally, sweater imports fell 10% in September, along with adults’ sweaters which dropped 9% in the month. As a consequence, total sweater imports for the 12 months through September 30 were 3% below their peak – the first drop since 2011. Warmer-than-average temperatures last winter may have changed consumers’ habits.
