Africa may pay as India returns to medical protectionism with vaccine limit (update)

The Indian government has reportedly blocked Serum Institute from exporting production of the Oxford University / AstraZeneca SARS-COV-2 vaccine until Indian requirements are met. That marks a return to the medical supply protectionism seen early in the pandemic. The move may hit African markets hardest given they accounted for 42.3% of all Indian vaccine exports in the 12 months to Oct. 31 and given export growth had already reached 63.6% year over year in October.
