American pork heads to China as coronavirus cuts U.S. demand

The demand from food service firms for pork in the U.S. has slumped due to coronavirus-linked lockdowns, leading WH Group’s Smithfield to close at least one of its factories. The drop in demand has made U.S. pork producers even more reliant on exports. China is likely to continue to be a major consumer of American pork given China is still recovering from the earlier effects of swine flu on its hog herd. U.S. exports of pork jumped 53.2% year over year in January and February combined after supplies to China surged 8.3-fold. That likely continued in March with total U.S. seaborne imports...
