The Australian government will assess whether it needs to restrict LNG exports in 2018 in order to protect domestic users. While overseas buyers, including CNOOC and Petrochina in China, won’t be disrupted until next year there may be an impact on near-term contract signing decisions. Chinese imports of LNG increased 54% in the three months to May 31, with growth likely having continued in June. Australian exporters had taken the lion’s share of this growth.
