The U.S. Commerce Department has started investigations of alleged dumping of Chinese aluminum cables at margins of up to 64%. That’s followed the imposition of 25% duties as part of the first round of section 301 duties covering around $34 billion of Chinese exports from early July. That would suggest American producers see the 25% duty rate as insufficient to deter Chinese exporters. Shipments from China to the U.S. had risen by 21% on a year earlier in the 12 months to July 31, mostly at the expense of suppliers from Canada and Mexico (which fell 24%).
