Car Sales Recovery May Be Short Lived as South Korean, German Imports Slump

U.S. light vehicle sales climbed 4% on a year earlier in March, breaking a four month run of sliding sales and resulting from a 14% rise in light trucks. Imported vehicles led the way with a 21% surge in sales. While monthly data may become sparse going forward due to GM’s decision to move to quarterly reporting, import data shows that a reverse in sales may occur after a 4% drop in imports by sea in March (i.e. April’s inventories). That brought the first quarter to a 2% drop, led by a 23% slide in shipments from South Korea (possibly due to GM’s woes there) and 16% from Germany. Export...
