The global shipbuilding industry may be struggling to recover from the logistics industry’s capacity discipline in the wake of COVID-19. New orders taken by China’s shipyards in July were half the monthly average value of Q2 and were 53.5% lower year over year. China’s yards have lost market share to South Korean shipbuilders including DSME and Hyundai Heavy. There was nonetheless a small increase in Chinese exports of ships of 1.7% year over year in July as completed orders rose. Exports from South Korea climbed by 18.0% while Japan’s slumped 68.5% lower.
