Japan’s finance and trade ministries will investigate Chinese exports of PET plastic, possibly applying tariffs of 54%. Chinese exports of PET resin have been in a long-term decline, falling 12% annually over the last three years as it has repeatedly been rejected from different markets. The U.S. is a prime example, where shipments are now de-minimis from 7% of the total in 2014. Exports to Japan expanded 5% over the past three years, and jumped 21% in the past quarter to now account for 26% of the total.
