Chinese Shipbuilding Starts to Slow as Order Drought Continues

China 3048 Theme - Shipbuilding 113

Orders received by Chinese shipyards were below production for a 14th straight month in July, leaving order-books at another new low of 80.3 dry-weight tons. That has led shipyards to start reducing their production, and were 25.9% below their April levels. Given the recent success of South Korean shipbuilders, the Chinese government may act to bolster the industry. That could take the form of direct support, or pushing shippers to commission new capacity, in order to revive the $22 billion export industry.
