The new German Economics Minister has stated that a U.S. import tariff or tax of 25% or more would be in breach of WTO rules. While indicating a more hawkish stance than the past, a WTO complaint may simply lead President Trump to take the U.S. out of the organization. Panjiva data shows German exports to the U.S. of completed autos were $25 billion in the 12 months to November 30, with a 25% tax equivalent to $7,600 per vehicle. U.S. imports of German autos fell for nine straight months to the end of 2016, but may have rebounded in January as dealers attempt to beat any tariffs.
