Fresh Del Monte has commissioned six new container vessels to take advantage of the surging growth in U.S. imports of fresh fruits. That follows a 10% increase in U.S. imports of fruit and vegetables by sea in the 12 months to August 31, an acceleration from 5% in the prior three years. An 18% surge in shipments from Chile have led the way. Chilean exporters, led by Dole, have also seen an 89% jump in exports to China in the 12 months to June 30.
