The Indian government may extend its “Make in India” economic development policy which is centered on tariffs to the furniture industry. Imports have actually contracted recently with a 2.3% year over year decline Indian imports of furniture in the 12 months to Oct. 31. The tariffs would increase frictions with China which represented 62.7% of total imports. Furniture importers at both ends of the quality spectrum will need to decide whether to change sourcing or just raise prices in response to the tariffs.
