Jameson’s Is The New Guinness This St. Patrick’s Day

Consumer Staples 760 U.S. 5317

While celebrating St. Patrick’s Day never really goes out of fashion in America, consumers’ drinking habits certainly change. Panjiva data shows that U.S. imports from Ireland of both beer (including Guinness) and whiskey (led by Jameson’s) typically peak in January of each year. That allows time for supply chains to distribute the products to retailers in time for the March 16 celebrations.

Panjiva data shows beer imports have improved, with a 3.7% increase on a year earlier in the three months to February 28 (including seaborne shipments). However, that was still 18.2% below the peak of 2016 whereas beer imports from all countries increased 10.1% over the same period. That would suggest a broader shift in tastes away from heavier “stout” beers to other drinks.

Whiskey imports meanwhile improved by 11.2% vs. 2017 and by 41.5% compared to 2016. The increase comes as U.S. spirits imports more broadly have increased, as outlined in Panjiva research of February 12, in particular led by a rise in shipments of tequila.

However you choose to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day, please do so responsibly.
