Jet Decision Today Only Part of Long Haul Trade Spat

The U.S. Commerce Department will decide today whether Canada has subsidized aircraft-maker Bombardier’s C-Series jet. The decision was delayed from July, and therefore brings the controversy to the midst of NAFTA negotiations. Commerce has been petitioned by both airlines (such as JetBlue that face higher costs) and other governments (the U.K.) to hold back from applying tariffs. The case is part of a broader, long term spat around government support – including Brazil – in a shrinking market.
