Indian automaker Mahindra+Mahindra will announce the details of its new U.S. auto assembly plant at Auburn Hills near Detroit on November 20, Bloomberg reports. The initial announcement of the plant’s construction was released in July, but details on location were not available. The plant will construct off-road vehicles, likely including versions of Mahindra’s Thar jeep among others. Mahindra is clearly looking for growth opportunities – its vehicle sales in the fiscal year to date have increased by just 2% on the prior year.

So far Mahindra’s activity in the U.S. has been focussed on agricultural vehicles. Panjiva data shows 79.9% of its $75.0 million of exports to the U.S. related to tractors and spares in first three quarters of this year. What isn’t yet known is the extent to which Mahindra will use locally-sourced parts, or utilize exports from its Indian operations.
