MOL Loses Car Shipping Ground to NYK and K-Line as South Korean Fines Bite

Cons. Discr. - Autos 1183 Corp - Shipping 978 South Korea 580 U.S. 5321

Ten car carrier operators have been fined $38 million for fixing prices in South Korea from 2002 to 2012. The case follows a similar one in Japan that involved $202 million in fines. Panjiva data shows the car carrier industry remains highly competitive, with volumes largely unchanged on 10 years ago despite a 7% rebound in the past year. Mitsui-OSK was the largest shipper on U.S.-bound routes, but has lost ground to NYK and K-Line who expanded 17% and 13% in the last year. The arriviste is Hyundai Mobis, which achieved a 6% market share from zero in 2015.
