Panama Looks to Suck in More LNG Tankers as Phase 1 Deal Beckons

The Panama Canal Authority will double the number of slots made available to LNG tankers to four per day in order to build its share of the burgeoning market. LNG tankers represented 110 crossings in 3Q 2019, up 29.4% year over year. The Suez Canal meanwhile handled 213 crossing over the same period, an increase of 13.9%. Given the U.S.-China “phase 1” trade deal may include LNG purchase commitments from China there’s likely to be continued growth in routing opportunities for Panama.
