Medical equipment manufacturer Varian Medical suffered a 260 basis points drop in its gross profit margin in 1Q 2019, of which 120 basis points were due to import tariffs. The firm has set about mitigating that via “commercialization, supply chain, our ability to get duties back out” according to CFO Gary Bischoping. The firm does yet appear to have made radical changes to its supply chain. Seaborne imports from China actually increased by 8.3% year over year in 1Q whereas imports from Europe fell 12.9%.
