Toyota May Hope for Clearer Roads With Argentine Tax Break

Argentina 57 Cons. Discr. - Autos 1179 Tariffs 1794

The government of Argentina is seeking to bolster its sagging economy with an improved export tax rebate for its automotive industry. The increase, to 6.5% from 2.0% of value shipped, covers shipments to the Mercosur trading bloc and follows a 34.4% year over year drop in exports to Mercosur – including Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay – in Feb. 2019. Toyota was the largest exporter in the 12 months to Feb. 28, ahead of Volkswagen and Ford, and has seen an 11.6% year over year drop in its exports of trucks and a 28.4% slump in car shipments.
