Trade Stays Central to U.S. Elections, More Exports Needed

The first round of the U.S. presidential debates opened with the economy and trade. Neither party emerged with new policies. Trump linking existing deals and jobs, and a commitment to renegotiate. Clinton confirmed opposition to the current TPP form and stressed enforcement of existing deals. Trade will remain central to the elections, but actions are needed to increase activity. Panjiva data shows U.S. exports to TPP countries fell every month on a year earlier since January 2015.
