The U.S. weapons industry had a weak end to 2017 after approved major export sales in December were just $200 million vs. $12.4 billion a year earlier. Aa a result total arms sales approvals by the DoD were unchanged in 2017 on a year earlier at $63 billion. The total could yet fall if the Canadian government continues to withhold its $5.2 bilion F/18 jet order. The Trump administration may seek to address this by pursuing a “whole of government” approach to arms sales, including defense attaches and diplomats, that may be announced in February.
