Worst Year Since Financial Crisis Looms for Shipbuilders, Fairer Sailing Ahead

The global shipbuilding industry may be heading for its worst year since 2008 after combined exports from China, Japan and South Korea fell 28.4% year-to-date vs. a year earlier to $58.4 billion. A slump in exports from South Korea has not been offset by a more recent improvement in shipments from China and Japan. The outlook for Chinese shipbuilders including CSIC may be improving after remaining orders for new vessels increased in November for the first time since May and year-to-date orders climbed 30.3% on a year earlier.
