Three months on from the expansion of section 232 duties on steel and aluminum imports to most suppliers by the Trump administration, the impact appears to have been significant but not transformative. Imports in the three months to August 31 fell 23% on a year earlier and by 7% vs. the first quarter. The rate of decline slowed to 16% in the month of August on a year earlier however. For steel products, where duties were 25%, there were significant declines in seaborne imports of customized products including non-alloy steel shapes (one third lower) while stainless steel shapes fell 18%....
