South Africa is investigating six shippers on suspicion of running a shipping price-setting cartel. This case could take a year to complete and lead to fines of 10% of revenues. It has parallels in an EU case that finished in July and required changes in pricing notifications. Prices for shipping from China to South Africa have jumped 84% since their lows at the end of April, based on Shanghai Shipping Exchange data. South African exports to the U.S. and China have fallen vs. last year, Panjiva data shows.
