The Panjiva Combined Cargo Index for the U.S. jumped 5% in October, the fastest rate of growth since March 2015 and taking the index above 130 for the first time. Two particularly strong elements were a 19% increase in seaborne shipments through Savannah despite Hurricane Matthew, and a 13% increase in airfreight at LAX. The outlook for November will hinge on whether optimism expressed by both consumers and managers in surveys is borne out by their actual activity.
