BMW Increases Spartanburg Commitment as Auto Imports Slide

Cons. Discr. - Autos 1247 Germany 267 U.S. 5399 United Kingdom 389

Automaker BMW will spend $600 million extending its Spartanburg factory in South Carolina through 2021. That may help temper the hawkish rhetoric towards the German manufacturers more generally by the administration President Donald Trump. Panjiva data shows BMW’s exports of completed autos to the U.S. fell 14% in the quarter to May 31. That comes as U.S. sales of imported autos dropped to a 20 year low in May. BMW’s parts imports also fell by 10%, suggesting lower production in the U.S. too.
