Brazil Finds Maersk / Hamburg Sud Deal “Complex”, Will Deepen Its Review

Brazil 415 Corp - Ports 908 Corp - Shipping 1025 Mergers 220 Mode - Containerized 1523

The Brazilian competition authority’s (CADE) initial determination has found Maersk’s proposed acquisition of Hamburg Sud is “complex” and needs further review. That’s due to the combination of shipping and port operations in the group, and their global nature. Maersk has already agreed to sell its cabotage business to CMA-CGM, but CADE may want more. The combined entity would have had a 36% market share of Brazilian international shipping in the second quarter, 1% point higher than a year earlier.
