Brazil is facing a controversy around its meat exports after police started investigating corruption in meat export standards, with the EU raising particular concerns. Panjiva data shows meat products made up 16% of the top 200 shipments from Brazil to the EU in the 12 months to January 31. Among specific products the EU made up 99.5% of Brazil’s offal shipments, and 43% of jointed, frozen beef. Meat generally accounts for 7% of Brazil’s exports globally, and the controversy won’t help attempts by the government to boost trade via new deals.
