Chinese Export Party May Leave Xi With U.S. Surplus Headache

Chinese trade growth surged in March as exports jumped 22% in yuan terms and 16% in dollars. The latter was well above economists’ expectations of a 5% increase. That may be explained by a 9% growth in exports to the U.S. that was hinted at by earlier evidence from seaborne shipment data. There was a broad-based improvement too with shipments to Japan and the EU increasing for the first time since last summer.
