Circumvention May Corrode Steel Case Impact

China 2968 Materials - Metals/Mining 748 Metals - Steel 511 Tariffs 1791 Vietnam 371

The Wall Street Journal reports there are investigations taking place into Chinese circumvention of U.S. tariffs on corrosion-resistant steel. These relate to Vietnamese shippers – Panjiva data show two who export the products to the U.S., and increased exports recently. Yet, no connection can be proven from the trade data. The case has in any event not had the desired effect. Imports from the countries, apart from China, investigated in the original trade case have jumped 152% since the case’s conclusion and overall U.S. imports have increased 37% on a year earlier in August.
