A group of over 170 members of the U.S. House of Representatives has called on the Commerce Department to reopen lumber market access negotiations with Canada. That follows a 44% rise in lumber prices year-to-date vs. a year earlier which has increased construction costs in America. It seems unlikely that a resolution can be easily achieved – assuming the Commerce Department has an appetite to pursue it – given the fractious nature of NAFTA negotiations and the WTO case already brought by Canada.
