Container-lines COSCO Shipping and SM Line may cooperate on intra-Asian shipping routes. That would help address SM Line’s lack of a global alliance membership and would likely lead to a specialization. In such an arrangement it would make sense for COSCO Shipping to handle trans-Pacific traffic while SM Line’s vessels focus on intra-Asia routes. SM Line carried 232k TEUs on Asia-U.S. trans-Pacific lanes in the 12 months to February 28, which was that was just 15% of COSCO Shipping’s.
