Brazil’s weak trade performance in September was not reflected in shipping volumes as high-volume, low-value products resulted in export shipments rising 10% on a year earlier and imports 3%. The biggest loser of Brazilian shipping market share in the month was MSC, possibly due to lower imports by Daimler. Zim returned to growth after sorting out its finances. In the third quarter overall five of the big six operators gained share at the expense of smaller players, Maersk being the exception. October may bring more of the same given Brazil’s imports and exports both fell in the month.
