Inkjets Jammed, Toner Drying Up as Print Imports Slow

China 3048 Info Tech - Tech Hardware 862 U.S. 5399

HP Inc’s report of a 8% decline in printer and supply revenues in the quarter to October 31 reflects a more general malaise in the industry. U.S. imports of laser- and inkjet printers fell 2% in the quarter, and are down 10% over 12 months on five years earlier. HP has fared worse than average, losing share alongside Samsung (whose printer business it is buying) to Canon. Sales of ink have done worse, with a 8% drop in the quarter and 31% drop vs. five years ago. This may be due to increased use of tablets and e-readers for business documents.
