Cooperation within the recently launched Korea Shipping Partnership may be in some doubt after Hyundai MM reportedly rejected SM Line’s proposals to jointly run trans-Pacific services to the U.S. It may be that Hyundai MM wants to pursue closer relations with the 2M alliance, though the KSP is being promoted by the hard-to-refuse South Korean government. SM Line handled 189k TEUs in 2017, having assumed volumes previously shipped by Hanjin Shipping. Hyundai MM meanwhile handled 3.3x as much when comparing to the two companies’ activity in the fourth quarter.
